Winter Pet Care for Florida Pets
Just because we are in Florida doesn’t mean that winter isn’t a real season. During the colder months of the year, our pets need extra care, too. Learn about winter pet care for your Florida critters from your team at South Seminole Animal Hospital.
Special Considerations for Florida Winters
Florida winters may be mild compared to other parts of the country, but there are certainly some special considerations for our pets during this time of year.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Temperature drops — A sudden cold snap can be hard on pets who are not acclimated to cooler temperatures. Very young pets, very old pets, and those with short hair coats are vulnerable in particular.
- Outdoor pets — Pets who are outside should have a dry, warm area of the ground to shelter in. Moisture can be just as troublesome as the cold.
- Winter allergies — Pollen and mold can be at high levels even in the winter, resulting in itching and other skin trouble.
- Holiday hazards — Beware of dangerous items that show up during the holiday season like decorations, potentially toxic plants, and unattended baked goods.
- Parasite problems — Don’t let your guard down in the winter. In Florida, there is no time of the year when your pets are safe from fleas, ticks, and heartworms.
By keeping these considerations in mind during Florida winters, you can help your pets to stay healthy year round.
