Did you know that scratching is central to cat health? While not always desirable, the instinct to scratch deserves a place in their routine, lifestyle, and environment. We’re not suggesting cat owners sacrifice their drapes or upholstery. On the contrary, with thoughtfully-placed scratching posts around the house, cats can be encouraged to focus their behavior in certain spots. But choosing the right cat scratching post(s) may be harder than it seems.

Physical and Mental Health

Cats scratch for the following reasons that all lead to their overall mental and physical well-being:

• To loosen worn outer layers of the nails and expose new growth 
• To stretch their back, chest, and leg muscles which, in turn, increases flexibility, dexterity, and grip strength necessary for climbing and hunting
• To mark their territory (powerful feline pheromones are produced in the feet and are deposited onto surfaces when scratched)
• To reduce stress and boredom

By installing a cat scratching post (or several throughout the home), you are helping your cat establish and maintain a healthy habit. Since scratching also helps to curb anxiety, you allow the opportunity to expend any built-up energy, frustration, or excitement that could manifest in other feline behavior. 

Considerations for Scratching Posts

Cat owners can provide a healthy outlet by enriching their cat’s environment with scratching posts. If possible, have at least one scratching post on every level of the home and consider the following factors:

• Location: As territorial animals, cats are highly invested in sleeping areas, food/water bowls, and room entrances. 
• Position: Vertical scratching post allow your cat to get the best possible stretch and can include stand alone post or mounting scratch pads on the backs of sofas, leaning against the wall and at corners. Some felines prefer horizontal scratch pads for their mani-pedis. Having a variety of material types, positioned at different angels, gives your pet the most options to stay satisfied.
• Texture: You want something that will last but also offers a satisfying shredding experience. Give your cat a variety of different textures and observe which ones they seem to prefer. This can include sisal rope, cardboard, or even carpet.

Redirecting Their Energy

There are synthetic attractants that can bring your cat’s attention to their scratching post if they don’t take to it immediately. You can also demonstrate how they should get the most out of their scratching posts. 

When you keep their nails nice and trimmed, cats try to sharpen them by scratching on resistant surfaces. Attend to their nails at least 1-2 times a month. If you need assistance with this important aspect of their care, please let us know. 

Additionally, finding ways to channel their energy can have an enormous impact on cat scratching behaviors. Find toys or activities that focus on your cat’s instincts to climb, pounce, hunt, hide, and even solve puzzles.
